Generator Inlets & Interlocks

Prepare for outages with a safe, straightforward way to connect portable backup power to selected circuits in your home.

The Scherner standard

Backup power.
A connection you can trust.

A generator inlet and listed interlock provide a permanent connection point for a compatible portable generator while helping prevent dangerous backfeeding. We plan the inlet location, wiring, breaker, interlock, grounding considerations, generator rating, and the loads you expect to operate during an outage.

Common questions

Answers about
generator hookups.

01Can a portable generator power my whole house?+

That depends on generator output and the loads being used. Most portable setups require active load management so high-demand equipment is not operated at the same time.

02Why is an interlock necessary?+

The interlock prevents the main breaker and generator breaker from being on simultaneously, helping prevent unsafe backfeeding.

03Can you use my existing portable generator?+

We can review its output, receptacle, cord connection, and intended loads to determine an appropriate installation.
